Woman, Aged 48, Bells Palsy

I developed Bells Palsy, on the 8 th August 2004, which paralysed the right-hand side of my face making me appear to have had a "Stroke". The right hand side of my face no longer worked. I could no longer frown, raise the eyebrow, blink, smile, drink without dribbling, speak without holding my mouth up at the side, chew food without it getting stuck in between my cheek and teeth, my hearing was intense (not loud noise blocked). The Doctor diagnosed immediately suggesting that he could prescribe huge doses of Steroids and Anti Viral medication, but research had not proved that this aided recovery. Initially I refused the treatment and headed straight to my PC for my own research, which did not disagree with the Doctor. After 6 days I agreed to take the Steroids and Anti Viral prescriptions for a course of 6 days, which did help a little.

Quote for the "LifeExtensions" Health Magazine -

" Bell's palsy is a paralysis of the facial muscle, usually occurring on only one side of the face. Approximately one person in every 4000 contracts the disease in any given year. It is more common among diabetics with high blood pressure and among pregnant women in the last third of their pregnancy.

The facial nerve passes through a narrow channel of bone in the face, so when the nerve swells due to inflammation, the result may be nerve compression and degeneration. The resulting lack of nerve function mainly prevents facial movement, but salivation, tear production, and facial sensation may also be reduced.

Recovery from Bell's palsy typically begins 3 weeks after onset of symptoms for 85% of patients, who fully recover within 6 months. About 5% experience permanent deformity. Younger patients have a better recovery rate than older ones. About 10% of patients will experience a recurrence of the disease at some time after recovery."

It soon became clear to me that I was not one of the 85% sufferers who recovered in 6 Months. My hearing was more normal and my eye would blink without manual intervention. In January 2005 I started "Trophic Neuromuscular Stimulator" physiotherapy. Which involved attaching 4 electrodes to various areas of my face these then sent electrical impulses to the muscles which were not being stimulated by the affected nerves to hopefully improve recovery. This treatment was quite painful and took an hour per day in quiet relaxing environment, not easy to achieve with 3 Children and a full time job. After 5 months I was still only seeing 30% recovery, with no improvement to the eyebrow, cheek and chin areas.

Clare asked me to be one of her "Bowen" case studies in April 2005. I had not heard of "Bowen" but jumped at the chance to get my "Smile" back. Clare started treatment in June 2005, which by then was almost a year since the Bells Palsy started, a long time for the muscles not to have been in use. The Bowen treatments have all been very relaxing, no process has been unpleasant or painful.

Gradually great improvements have been achieved: -

· My right eye now looks more normal and equally balanced with the left eye.

· My cheek movement has improved, dimple reappeared, speaking without my lips slicking together, drinking and eating are all much easier and more normal.

· My smile has almost returned to normal (very important to me a very smiley person)

· My right eyebrow has begun to move slightly, this started almost 19 months since the Bells Palsy's onset. I am now almost able to frown but still cannot raise this eyebrow.

· My crows feet have returned and other wrinkles (maybe could have left this recovery out)

Other benefits attributed to Bowen treatments: -

· I have lost half a stone in weight.

· Body realignment has given me a much stronger back. I used to regularly require Osteopathic work on my back if a jarred it gardening or walking. In August last year I did jar my back thudding into an unseen hole, at the time I thought oh no that's me out of action for a few days, but next day I was absolutely fine. I feel sure this would not have been the case in previous years.

· Caesarean scar tissue, which was a massive 1 inch deep / wide and 8 inches across, virtually disappeared after 2 nd or 3 rd treatment. Clare informed me that this was not actually scar tissue more likely to be badly drained lymph.

· Breast lump (already diagnosed as a fatty tissue lump) reduced in size after just one treatment.

· Much better sleep patterns.

· Much more energy.

I am personally extremely grateful to Clare for introducing me to "Bowen". I believe Clare has enabled recovery, for me, which may never have occurred without her Bowen knowledge and faith, Thank You Clare.
